stereo removal

i have a 1996 GT how do i remove the stereo and replace it with a nice tasty one please?

Do the following:

Remove the gear knob..

Remove the gear sround, just clips on.

just under the lighter section there are 2 screws, remove them

Rest of the sround is one piece, cearfully remove it, it is also clip on jobby. dont use any sharp objects

Stereo is mounted on a bracket with 4 screws. may be 5 sometimes, remove the bracket

and stereo can be taken on the bracket.

I know the topic is old, but I have a question that relates to it:)

I've just bought a new Pioneer head unit for my 96 Celi GT, I have all the necessary conversion cables etc, however one thing I don't have is a replacement facia. I can find ones for older pre 94 Celicas, and indeed the latest model, but zip all for mine. Even caraudio direct couldn't help, although they suggested the 83 - 94 facia set they have *may* fit.

Any ideas as to where I can get one, as I don't particularly want a gaping hole where the slot CD player used to sit under the old casette/radio head unit.

Also if anyone is having problems installing a replacement set of Speakers in a 94 -98 Celica, let me know, as I'll be uploading a small guide and a few piccies on how to do it onto my webserver when I get a mo - well it's the way I did it anyway!:)

if it had the double din unit fitted you can buy the black box that was on 94- 95 celicas and gen 5's , which screws onto the side of the new head unit , they cost somewhere near £ 40 , also no need need to remove gear knob and surround , simply push it to 1 side to gain access to those 2 screws.

Dunno if it makes a difference, but the Toyota stereo currently installed is actually 2 single DIN units, a Cassette/radio on top, and a single disk CD player underneath, which according to my owners manual was an optional extra. Would the double Din facia you mentioned still be appropriate? If so, any ideas where I can get one

if you just want a single cd player as i have , its 2 silver brackets which attatch to the side of the single din , with a black box with the word TOYOTA embossed onto it , this hides the lower hole.

go here download the pdf file i know its an older model but its pretty much the same.the box they use is flat . the 1 you get from toyota has the toyota logo on it.

You can also try autoleads. I got a cubby hole adaptor from them for about 14 quid. :D

also on the gen6 the small oblong facia that clips around the head unit itself dont fit most - due to the hole being so small .i had to leave mine off on a sony explode mp3.

I've just had the same problem when installing a Kenwood stereo in my '95 gen 6. Autoleads sell a pocket kit FP-11-01 which you can get from most large audio specialists, it costs about £25-£30. I also contacted Toyota and they had a pocket that was only £12-60 T55521-16030.

Obviously I got the one from Toyota and it fitted straight in. The only thing I had to do was trim the fascia of my Kenwood in order for it to fit.

especially Mr Stixx for providing the link to that install guide - I was quite worried that my car has the seperate amp, and that would cause me a major headache - the guide has put these fears nicely to rest:)

went to that link, i got a double one too, cd on bottom,

never realised it looked so much hassle to replace it

has anyone done it? gen 5?

it looks though easy enough with a bit of time and effort

Replaced mine with a single din unit. Got a cubby hole adapter from autoleads. No real problems. Took about an hour.
