Gti 5th Gear Pop Out

well i just got me mate to pick a gti up 4 me last nite in wales he drove it to the boat no problems apart from the gearbox popping out of fifth every no and again. whats the problem there ,or could it be a few diffirent things might be wrong.

oh and if anybody got a parcel shelf out there 4 sale let me know

It's a known proplem with this, and other, boxes. %th gear needs to be replaced.

the dog teeth are worn you need a new 5th gear and sleeve . or just may be sleeve.

This was a known problem when they were nearly new 3-5 year old,

back then Toyota sold a new 5th gear assy for £250 - but most were done under warranty!

Thankfully box does not need strip down as 5th gear part is a seperate piece so to speak

It could just be the 5th gear synchro thats worn, as far as I am aware this was the main problem with these.

Not overly difficult to replace as mentioned earlier box doesn't need to be split to replace the synchro or the 5th gear if it turns out it is the gear.

synchro is about £20ish from Toyota

Id say its just the 5th gear synchro thats knackar'd.. very unlikly that 5th gear is actually shot.. but if ure gonna whip the box out could always play safe and do the whole lot just in case but like twincam says $250 bar is kinda steep if its not needed...
