98 Rav4. 5th Gear

Hi Guys

I've posted something about me car before (although I was going on about a clutch). I trawled through posts then to get an idea

I've a 98 2.0petrol Rav. I still love it despite what the green politicians think.

For months something hasn't been smooth about gearbox - I can be cruising along and let off throttle and rather than smoothly cruise or gradually slow the gearbox seems to battle with wanting to cruise along.

I have noticed it all gradually happen.

Recently It does get a BIT more clanky and difficult to change gear, local garages have had no idea. Clutch seems fine.

Then the last week me car pops out of 5th gear.

I rang a local gearbox/diff/transmission specialist (S.E.Wales area = Cwmbran Gearbox Centre 01633 871766 incase any needs another number) straight away he explained what I'm experiencing. A day job overhauling the 5th gear- £385 plus VAT. Probably worn 5th Gear. Also he mentioned the roller bearing. I have had quite a few people recommend the Gearbox centre and I've no worries they do a good job.

I'm a bit more concerned something could be 'lost in Translation' - I'm mechanically minded until it comes to engines, gearboxes and transmissions as they are out of my realms of experience.

Basically, If anyone out there can think of other likely issues that could be more 'problematic' I'd sure appreciate it. After all I love my Rav but old cars are only worth so much these days.

I've come across posts quoting a flywheel problem with many Rav's . I also though it possible the rear mounts (for prop shaft ) will contribute to clanky clunky gearchange/uptake.

Whilst someone works on the car they may have underestimated what is wrong - after all I only summed things up by phone.

Can anyone see any pitfalls with a job concerning my problem?

Firstly an "as new" box feels a bit clunky but this is down to the cable change and the selectors detent springs at the bottom of the stick. Secondly, the 5th gear problem is well known and can be resolved without removing the gearbox from the car. There is a very good pictorial of the whole process on R4W;

If you buy the parts off Kingo at a discount and get a good local garage to follow the instructions they should be able to get your box back to good as new.

I don't or won't have an 'as new' box. As far as I know I will be having a fifth gear overhaul. A certain part or parts associated with 5th gear will be replaced from a gearbox stripdown.

My gearbox will be approx 10yrs old, 106K miles done = probable wear somewhere. I'm callin in to the place in about an hour so I'll keep everyone posted on what he/they think.

I can understand wear and tear - just I can't conceive the total amount of problems that could be encountered and Where.

I'll have a look at the pictorial a bit later - thanks for reply and the link. Maybe I'll look into that.

What I do know: I can drive in 1st to 4th ok and most of time now 5th gear will stay engaged but it is starting to pop out of 5th and that is months into a less smooth gearbox / transmission feeling that I've noticed. Clutch seems as strong as an OX.

I shall hopefully returnwith more info.

Golly gosh - I go on holiday for 2 weeks and get nunners of emails about 4.1 RAVs!

The 5th gear pops out cos folk use it to rest their paw on.

I have a gearbox on my 1st RAV4 wots done 180k miles and is now pushing thru around 280bhp. No probs. The 5th gear is a simple in car fix as anchorman says.

I get 90mph out of the gear train even with diff lock on - the gearbox will stand 350bhp afore ye get problems.

I have a 97 rav 4, 4x4 with a 5 speed and i also have the problem with 5th gear popping out. the car has 112,000 miles on it. i tried looking at that website that is listed for repairing it but i can't get it to load. does anyone have the repair instructions or guide that they could send me? i think i may attempt to repair it myself since i have a little know how about cars. thank you.

Welcome to the club.

Try holding control while you click the link as it definitely works for me. It is a thread from the US website "RAV4World". If you struggle I will try to save it as a pdf or something more useable but it is a very good guide.

nearly all 2nd and 3rd year warranties are under written by an insurance company, and from my previous posting if part are deemed to have failed and no measurements are recorded the warranty claim is invalied (false) and the dealership wont honour the claim because all warranty claims are now audited, the dealer will be hit by a hefty fine by the manufacturer for false claims, all manufacturers now have to do this because of the block exemption rule, having spent 23 years in the motor trade with main dealers this is now a daily problem for customers, the manufacturers make the rules, they are in the buisness to make money.
