Hi, just a quick question. Can anyone tell me if the engine in a 4A-FE Carina is wrecked when the timing belt snaps or is it valve safe?

Thanks

I don't know for sure but I do remember reading something recently to say it is valve safe. You can usually tell by the noise it makes when the belt goes, I would have thought!

Thanks for the reply Winelight, I wasn't driving myself so don't know what noise it made. I'll put on a new belt and hope for the best.

Carina engine is not valve safe (Interference Engine) depending on speed engine was doing when belt let go it will have an affect on how much or how little damage? The least you can inspect is bent valves, sorry for bad news.

Apparently both 4a-fe and 4e-fe are 'non-interference' ie valve safe. Whether any other damage occurs is another matter.
