Disc Replacement - Opinion Required

On a visit to my local 'mechanic' he suggested that I need at least 3 discs replaced.

For those who are technically minded, and relatively intelligent (probably those not from the UK), its discs at L3/4/5

The symptoms are after 16 years of wear following a severe accident, 2 'knuckle' type joints are worn and 2 'links' are grinding.

A more recent symptom has been developing over the past 9 months - a stiffening in the joints and a distinct weakness in the right driveshaft... that the 'mechanic' believes to be caused by a worsening of the mechanical properties of the discs.

Back 16 years ago, no-one had ever imagined the need to replace 3 discs or more in one go; and generally the rolling chassis was substituted for a light weight metal version.

now, has science moved on? Can any of you offer experience or knowledge of getting 3 to 4 discs replaced all at the one time? Is it possible and how safe is it? If its not a safe procedure, I do not relish the thought of turning round in circles every day just to move forward!

I went for an MOT last week and passed altho i think it was a botch job.

Its part of the new DLA test and they seem to be using an American system.

So what do i do? Try another MOT? get the discs replaced? Appeal for a review of the failure?

The short term remedial fix (fuel additives) is causing bleed-out so a longer term repair seems necessary...unless we go for a new subframe?

Any thoughts?

(edit: the sub-heading should read disc and not dics before somebody gets the wrong handle)
