Hi to all, new to forum.

Have recently bought a 2002 rav4 and am having a couple of problems.

1. keeps stalling as you slow down to a stop.

2. idle seems very errratic.

I think these problems are related, after reading the forum for a few minutes noticed the maf and icv could be the problem.

Is there any info on how to sort these out .

many thanks ken b

I am also new to the Rav4 but not to MAFs.

MAF stands for Mass Air Flow sensor. It measures the flow of air being drawn into the engine and thus, regulates the amount of fuel the engine needs for maximum efficiency. The MAF has a very fine and delicate wire filament that it uses to do this. Over time this filament degrades and gradually goes out of spec. I have heard of people cleaning a MAF with IPA (a high alcohol contact cleaner you can buy at Maplins or on the net) and claiming good results. I have tried it twice on me Rover 75 CDTi and it made no difference but my MAF may have been beyond hope.

Dont know about the Rav engine but some engines (R 75 included) will run better with the MAF unplugged than with a degraded MAF plugged in. The symptoms you describe are classic MAF faults.

Good luck.
