Speed Meter Problems

Hi there toyota and specially carina folks!

The speed meter of my -92 3s-fe AUTOMATIC carina e has been giving me trouble for some time now. First the trip meter froze when i reset it. After changing the whole speedmeter assy all was fine for some 10 000 miles, then both the speed meter and trip meter stopped working. Changed the speed meter assy again with no result.

Now im quite sure its the sensor thats broken. Only thing is a new sensor costs way over my budget and Ive understood that only the pick up part of the sensor can be changed without opening the transmission, and the part that spins and gives the signal is made of plastic and probably needing the whole transmission to be opened. What would you guys do in my situation?

The RPM meter has also been working on and off. It works better when the engine is warm and the weather is dry. Thinking dirt or moisture in the coils? Where does the rev counter get its signal from?

Thanks alot for any help.
