Something I Seen Today Regarding Mfr Warranty

sitting in the mot station and I clocked this poster

ive heard people say about full Toyota service history to claim warranty or extended warranty

just wondering if this info has any "clout" when it comes to folk arguing with Toyota about their warranty claims and don't have full manufacturer/dealer service history but do have full service history of some description

also a good bartering point when buying a new/used car.

don't let the salesman pigeon hole you into accepting the deal with servicing to keep the warranty valid as part of the deal

None of this is new and has been in place for 12 years or so.

This is covered under Block Exemption regulations, amended in 2002 and the majority of which came into force in October 2003.

There are several points regarding this:

1. This only applies to the new car warranty period. Extended warranties or used car warranties can legally stipulate by whom a vehicle is serviced and repaired, in order for the warranty to remain in force.

2. Quoted from the AA website - "The work can be carried out by an independent garage as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

If one has a warranty claim, it is easier to prove the vehicle has been serviced properly if the servicing has been done by that marque's dealer network. If servicing is done by an independent, one may have to prove the car has been serviced in line with the manufacturer's servicing schedule and using parts of equivalent quality to those used by the manufacturer - and if the manufacturer disagrees with how the car has been serviced .........

3. The report by the OFT is over 12 years old, so the comparison between main dealer prices and independent garage prices may no longer be accurate. Yes, independents are generally cheaper, but with manufacturers offering schemes like fixed price servicing, for many the gap has been narrowed.

4. Independents may not have access to manufacturer service bulletins and the like, so things like software updates, and other rectification work may not be done.

5. Once outside the new car warranty, if one needs a major repair done, a main dealer service history will stand one in good stead for a goodwill contribution towards the cost of repairs from the manufacturer. Generally, if one doesn't have a main dealer service history, one can say goodbye to goodwill from the manufacturer. Goodwill works both ways.

Im going to quiz my brorher he sells kia with 7 years warranty but customers have to pay for dealer servicing in this period for warranty to stand as far as im led to believe.

He says the kia and hyundai servicing and parts are the most expensive of the franchise.

Just wondering if its a clause

Or twisted truths by the salesmen

Most new car warranties don't include servicing. Customers commonly can choose to have a service plan with their supplying or local dealer, pay for a fixed price service package if offered by the manufacturer, or pay for services as and when they occur.

Frostyballs' info is bang on, the car industry lost a huge court case years ago. The new car warranty is the warranty given by the manufacturer when new, and is different from any other warranty. While under the new car warranty you can have it serviced by any vat registered garage but the onus is on you to prove it was serviced to the manufacturer's spec and intervals, ie you need receipts.

With any other warranty the company can specify the conditions as they wish.

Confusion might arise with goodwill gestures tho. For example Toyota offer a 7 year or (IIRC) 107k mile "goodwill gesture" to cover a known engine fault on some models. However they only honour the goodwill if you've had it serviced at Toyota since new.
