a few weeks ago I had a hired car refused from Europcar because I did not have my counterpart with me

I can get a car from Enterprize, Hertz, Avis and another one with no problems

does anyone keep their counterpart with them at all times?

I do when I need to hire a car or van.

The reason they need to see the counterpart document is because that is the only place that shows your convictions and points.

Enterpise, Hertz and Avis were not following the rules if you got a car from them without showing the counterpart, as your insurance could be invalidated on the hire car if you have certain convictions on your license.

I always take the counterpart section with me when I visit Europe or the USA but as yet have never been asked for it. I think it is generally this country where you will need it.

I don't always carry the photo card bit of it so no, the paper bit (if that's what you're referring to, I'm tired & can't be bothered checking) is never with me unless I know I specifically need it

The photocard bit is useless on it's own, we have to provide both parts of all our staffs driving licenses to our insurance company. That's because the convictions are on the paper bit. The Hire company would have been in deep doodoo's if you were disqualified and been able to hire a car, especially if you had a bump!

slight change in topic, how many years to do you have to have had a license before you can hire a car, 1 or 2 years?

In France you have to be 25, its the same for most companies in the UK, there are a few company who will still accept you if you are 21

your 27 so you shouldnt have a prob

yeah probably as its just long term hire on behalf of the company usually, unless they own their own and then its up to their own P&P I guess

was blatenly told by company directer at the xmas party this year that i was never going to get a company car (even though I am one promotion away from one) as i may have accidently overtaken him (safely) on the way to work one day  - he was driving rather slow tho and I didnt realise it was him

with a company car you are only insured for works purposes

outside works time will be under you own insurance

I think the age limit is 25

The age issue and how many years you have had a licence is not a cut and dry issue, it depends on who the insurers are. Some companies will specify drivers must have held licence for one or two years, whatever their terms are

Company car drivers don't need extra insurance for out of hours work, you are insured 24 hours a day, you could'nt specify somebody being insured 9-5 with one company and 5-9 with another, it doesnt work like that

Company cars are becoming a thing of the past, a lot of companies now have a user chooser scheme where you can select from a list of cars within a price range, the company then pays the employee an amount of money to cover the lease of the car

  • 5 weeks later...

so Europcar upsets me again, this time it was at Manchester Airport

I landed at T2 and saw a sign on their T2 office that it is close and I would have to goto their T1 office, not easy when carrying 40Kilos

I had the paper part this time to keep them happy, I paid the extra 11 quidish do that I dont have to pay the 500 quid excess incase of an accident, then they charged me a 250 quid security depost and took my thumb print

well.... I do have 6 point on my licence and I do have 6 years no claims discount, so that should do some canceling out

to make things worst, they have given me a go-kart, it is a Fiat Grande Punto which is not very grand

Also, if you have a company car for 2 years, does that not wipe out any no claims bonus that you may have earned on a private vehicle(s) after 2 years on the company insurance? Something to consider when getting a company car.
