Avensis Oxygen Sensor - Warning Light

Avensis Avenger

I bought an Avensis Tourer D4D 2.0 Auto 54 plate (Jan 05) a few months ago and the engine warning light has been coming on intermittently. 3 times in the last month and a half, never for more than about 10 minutes. Doesn't seem to relate to when/where/how I have been driving or petrol levels etc.

Questions are

1) Anyone know what it could be? Many threads cover permanent engine warning light relating to O2 sensor but none covering an intermittent light.

2) Honest John says that the 1997 - 2002 Avensis "Has a 3-year manufacturer warranty, and 5-year extended warranty on expensive Lambda probe" (the Lamdba probe as I understand it is the O2 sensor)

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=401

Does this warranty exist as standard? Has anyone invoked it? Does it apply to the 2003 - 2008 Avensis?

Many Thanks

To Avensis Avenger,

Unless you purchased car as a private sale, your best bet is to take your car to local Toyota agent or back to dealer who sold car to you & have then check car ECM for any recorded error codes. Cannot help you with warranty, maybe a call to Toyota customer service in regards to warranty period & what it covers will clear matter. As to lambdas, no matter what make of car you have unless buying non- original parts they are all pricey. Until you have a diagnostics check carried out on car you will not find out why light is coming on. Maybe a friend has a code reader that could point you towards possible problem.

Regards, Beagh.

PS: If you are able to post possible error code, someone on the forum should be able to help. Why worry over Lambda without having had your car checked

out first.

Hi ,

Funny enough I have just bought 2.0 Tspirit 2004 50,000 miles ...and yes...the Engine mangement lights come on Intermittent...so having rang Toyota Garge in Hendon ...thy said till the light stays on they cant diagnose fault...than i rang Toyota specialist in Kent ..he stated the fault code stores in memory and so can be picked up...cost of diagnosis only... is about £46 ...I than found a diagnosis tool on eBay ..£25 ...tested today and getting fault code PO 139 and PO 159 ....both are o2 sensor CKT slow response ...I really dont know exactly what they mean....possible faulty 02 sensors.

Why Intermittent?... As these sensors are exhaust related ...I think they only activate when it reaches certain Temperature...we found this yesterday..wife drove few miles and light stayed on...after overnight...started this morning..no light...same thing before...could be wrong so if anyone else can add any comments would be great

I hope this helps and if anyone can advise me if I need to change O2 sensors..which i read elsewhere...may not be problem...

Thanks

I think if a car is under 100,000 miles its a bit early for the Lamba sensors to fail. The last time i changed a sensor was when the EML came on, on a 01 Avensis that had done 172,000 miles. He said its the first time he had the sensors changed. I'm sure they do last a long time but yes over time they do clog up the soot deposits.
