Boot Not Opening, Possibly Broken Bolt From Spoiler Causing Problem&#3

Hello Folks,

I've got an unusual problem with my imported Japanese Yaris/Vitz.

The car was more modified than I realised when I bought it, it has TEIN coilover suspension, exhaust, spoilers etc.

I didn't realise how bumpy the ride would be on terrible Irish roads.

Recently while driving over a speed bump there was a ping sound from the boot like something snapped.

When I'd open the boot or close it there was definitely something rattling around in there.

About a week ago the boot stopped opening, neither the release in the cabin or turning the key in it will open it. It does seem as though it is opened a tiny bit as it is noisier driving around, like the boot is rattling a little.

Now at the weekend I tried removing the spoiler as it had come a bit loose at one side. One of the bolts that went into the top of the boot was missing, I suspect perhaps this broke off and was what has caused the problem.

Just wondering how I would go about sorting this out.

There seems to be a panel on the back of the boot lid, how would I remove this to have a look?

Chances are I won't be able to fix this but I might as well have a look.

There are also small holes drilled into the top of the bootlid to bolt the spoiler on but I have no idea how to access the back of them to put a new bolt into the spoiler.

Finally the spoiler was also attached using some kind of double sided rubber sticky tape to hold it in place as well as the bolts. Any idea where I could find some more of this?

I can post pictures of the areas if it would help.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert

The panel on the rear of the boot lid is just clipped in place (assuming you mean the plastic panel) and you can just sprise it off with a flat blade screwdriver, but be carefull the lugs don't snap off!!

The boot not opening at all sounds like the locking mechanism has jammed somehow.

Maybe the snapping noise was part of the locking system breaking off and now it's jammed shut.

I would remove the placcy panel and have a root about inside, hopefully you can find the broken bit and find out where it came from, then order a new part or something.

Sorry i can't be more helpfull but as you mention, some pictures posted may be of help to others.

Good luck. ;)

Thanks for the reply.

I removed the panel, cannot see anything stuck that should not be there.

The unlock mechanism does seem to work, it clicks, but the boot is stuck fast.

I took some pictures and attached them, very hard to get a decent angle, perhaps this might help.

Am I better off going to an independant mechanic for this (who is likely to be cheaper) or a Toyota garage (who will be more likely to have the part.

The annoying thing is that I cant get access to the spolier bolts unless I get the boot open so I cant rally drive the car till I get the boot open.
