100%. That's why I felt compelled to post that. No one seemed to suggest this.

    Dead DA and dead battery

Thanks, I am sure I could have survived carrying the jumper battery in the back seat until BH, but I've ordered one yesterday from Tayna, arrives today.

    4wd issues

Jack, the grinding and low range engagement issue could be caused by a couple of problems. Its possible that worn internal components like gears or shift forks could be causing the problems in the transfer case. A misaligned or damaged linkage can sometimes mimic internal issues by preventing a clean shift. A couple of other issues whilst less likely should also be taken into consideration. The 4WD actuator, A faulty actuator wouldn't engage the front wheels in low range, explaining the lack of movement and the 4WD light not coming on.Vacuum lines and solenoids, Leaks or malfunctions could interrupt engagement.Wiring problems could explain the 4WD light malfunction, this is more associated with electronic systems.I would check the vacuum lines and electrical connections for damage.Hope this helps.

    Cheap Avensis Estate ?

Not sure about the V Matic, but not seen many issues cropping up here about them either. I have the manual 6 speed and I must say its the sweetest changing box I have ever come across. The T27 1.8 petrol isn't very 'torquey' when you are used to a diesel (as I was), took me a while to get used to it. But, exactly as you said earlier, a bit bland to drive, but, I know that if I want to drive from one end of the country to another tomorrow my Avensis will get me there and back, no issues. The estate I have has good load space, but, get one with air-con (usually works) and cruise control.

    Dead DA and dead battery

Halfords own-brand of batteries are made for them by Yuasa, fwiw. I have had this confirmed, over time, by two different staff and a member of Yuasa technical support. If you did choose a Halfords battery, sometimes there are online-only discounts for 'collection in store', these tend to happen around bank holidays though.

    Bluetooth Connection on Yaris

I dont have issues on my other Toyota, same toyota Touch2 but the Yaris will only connect if I give thumbprint in to phone, then music comes on. Been through phone a million times, driving me bonkers lol Phone is fine can accept calls etc. I am wondering whether its an issue with Touch 2 allowed access to Youtube Music. Again my other car has no issues. I do think its a samsung issue

    Bluetooth Connection on Yaris

My 2018 Yaris connects automatically to my phone as long as the phone's Bluetooth is on. And it starts playing music automatically. If there is a setting on the phone for trust the connection, it will be in the phone's Bluetooth settings.

    Paint quality

It has been mentioned on this and other similar threads that these issues are caused by using waterborne paint. This is not correct as there is no major car producer using waterborne paint for the final top or clear coat. Waterborne is simply not durable enough and does not have the clarity and/or gloss of solvent borne. Yes waterborne is used for base coats but actually many paint lines are reverting back to solvent since when the carbon footprint of the paint process is calculated solvent is advantaged as it uses less energy to dry/cure than a waterborne system. Paint producers tread a fine line between scratch resistance and stone chip resistance. A hard scratch resistant clear coat will often be brittle and could give rise to chipping issues. Other causes why people perceive that stone chipping is worse could include factors such as the state of the roads, the actual design of the car - many new cars - particularly EVs look like a 3 year old has designed it to resemble a motorised Lego block. The colour of a car also has a massive effect on the perception of scratching. My Eclipse black car shows up every scratch and swirl from incorrect washing and I take a lot of care to ensure it is washed gently with as little contact washing as possible and never ever let the dealers wash it with a bucket of suspended grit and sand.

    Cheap Avensis Estate ?

I'd keep the Passat. The associated issues with modern diesels have nothing to do with the B5 or B5.5. I took a 130 PD estate from 90k to almost 300k with very little going wrong, great cars if you skint. The Passat did have age issues around suspension, etc., like most cars, but it is nothing unusual; my current T27 petrol is even more bulletproof, but as others here said, check what you get. If you find a 1.8 Petrol, put aside some cash for potential issues with EPB and stick to manual, this gearbox is terrific and very similar in smoothness to the B5. Do all the checks, especially for rust underneath cars that spent time in areas of heavily slated roads. Like others said here, up your budget by 1k to find a semi-decent one.

    Accident Damage

I’ve booked it in for paintwork ( bumper corner ) to be re-sprayed ( £180 ), plus ordered some gloss touch-up paint for the grille. Hopefully, job done. 🤞🏼 Thanks for all the comments. 👍👍

TBH, the horn isn’t that bad. It’s the wife’s car, so I’m not tooting and hiding most of the time. 😳

    Confusion

Hmm, it shouldn't do that. Speed limits lapse after about 200 yards so when you've driven that distance without another sign the car should revert to whatever the normal limit is on that road. My '19 Corolla does that so it sounds like a backward step for the newer models. Unfortunately from reading about the legislation it looks like this technology is here to stay. If it was accurate it would rarely bother me but in my '19 Corolla at least it just isn't.

    Accident Damage

Ours doesn’t have the active cruise control, so no radar to worry about. 👍

    Cheap Avensis Estate ?

I don't see the reasoning of "only 4k miles per year" and "want a petrol". I have two diesels, one does 2k and the other does maybe 3k per year. I have owned one (Smart) for 8 years and the Citroen for about 5. It is the fourth C3 I have had, all diesel and all doing the same mileage approximately. No significant problems with any of them.
  27. AndrueC

    Confusion

Agreed. I'm just hoping that by the time Toyota start selling a sold-state BEV alternative to my Corolla they have heard the complaints and provided a way to turn this crap off.
