Removing Rear Seats And Spare Key

Hi again

Just collected my 3dr 2003 1.8 VVTI-NV this evening and first thing we want to do tomorrow is remove the rear seats and install the dog guard. I am sure I read some instructions somewhere but now can't find them! Any hints and tips as no idea how complex a job it might be?

It only came with 1 key(altho dealer is harassing previous owner to see if a spare can be located) and idea's how much a replacement will cost, or any ways of reducing this? Many thanks in advance

On a 5 door the rear seats come out easy by just flippping the catch at the front of the runners. Not too sure about the 3 door but somebody will confirm.

It does tell you how to remove the seats in the handbook, but from memory  you have to remove headrests, then there are 3 manouveres. fold backrests fully foreward till they click down I think this is the strap with loop near the headrests  then pull strap at bottom + roll whole seat upward + foreward then there is another strap or catch  which releases a claw like arrangement allowing each seat to be lifted up + removed.. Keys are available from eBay + lots of specialists I noticed even Timpsons do them (or is that a load of cobblers) certainly they are available for a lot lot less than Mr T can do them.. hope this helps  Stew

Thanks Stew, I guess it must but sadly no handbook came with the car, speaking of which is anyone knows where I can find one- not looked yet but will trawl later!

My clever husband arrived at the front door with 2 duly removed seats this morning! Boot liner and dog guard installed and we've been for our first journey with Stanley the Whippet! Rear seatbelts will now need to come out as he's likely to chew them!!

Just a question about your current key... What colour is it and does it has 2 buttons?

Make sure you get a MASTER KEY from that dealer and also try to get the small metal strip with the key number on it. Although as long as the locks are then same from new and you have the MASTER KEY, Toyota can still create a replacement key for you.

How too to indentify your master key? Try to lock / unlock the glove box as the grey backup key can’t do this. According the owners manual this is the key you give to the grease monkeys when you book it in so they can't open the grove box. Not very practical as the pollen filter sits behind it as the ICE does :!Removed!:

If you don't have a master key and also not the keynumber, Toyota can't create replacement keys and will come with a quote of a new ECU & Key Set! That will set you back some serious £ :crybaby:

Thanks, I assume its the masterkey, it has the 2 buttons on it for the remote central locking and has black casing. I am sure Toyota can cut me a replacement but I was looking at whether there are any cheaper options as Toyota are likely to be very pricey!

The problem is that it has the imobiliser chip in it (if you open the key it’s that block with the buttons) and that is what you need to start the engine. Cutting the key is not a problem but getting a replacement chip it is…
