If the speedo stopped workin, quite possibly a quick fix, happend to mine. If your looking under the car from the rear bumper forward, about the midle of the transmission on the bottom youll see a cable (wrapped of course) going into your tranny. Its held on by a small 10-12 MM Bolt. Take off the bolt and the speed sensor can come out... only problem is its probably seized so its gonna take some work. Once you get that out youll probably find the teeth are worn/stripped. Buy a new gear from toyota for like 40$ and put it all back together. This is a site w.pics. I didnt have to remove the motor mount, just a little more difficult.

Now if you fix the gear and still no go, the 2nd thing it could be is the gear inside the transmission, which will run you like more then 1000$ cuz the trannys gotta get opened up.

Or the cables just snapped??

Hope this helps.

most likely the cable though. bit of a pig but as far as im aware you can change the inner cable without too much stripdown.
