Water Leaking Into Spare Wheel Well... Estate Not Hatchback....

Hi there I bought a 1999 Avensis (Pre-Facelift) Estate yesterday to replace my newer yet unreliable Mondeo...

Upon inspection of the boot, the spare wheel was covered in 3-4 inches of water and the well in which the jack sits was also covered....

Now upon reading up on this, this affects the hatchbacks, not sure about the estates... is it the same principle....

This car has roof rails on, would I need to remove them? To peel back this plastic strip and seal underneath it, presuming it is the same problem i.e the joint between the roof and rear quarter panel having an unseal gap in it?

I will also remove, clean and seal the rear clusters with black silicone...

Help especially pictures will be much appreciated...
