Celica Vvti, Cant Get Cooling System Blead

Guys, bought a vvti celica, (it was time to replace the st202 after 11 years) it was damaged at the front, removed the old radiator (just bent wasnt burst) I replaced it last night, but i have tried to bleed the cooling system and am having no joy.

I filled the expansion bottle and removed the bleed screw from it, but very little water went into the system, when i pinch the main radiator hoses they feel empty, i think the car is air locked, but i was scared to keep the engine running incase i caused any over heating damage. Any body came accross this before or can help me please.
