2000 4runner Stereo

I'm trying to install new Speakers and an amp in a 2000 4runner and still retain the stock head unit (3 in 1 CD/tape/radio). I was told I need a line output converter to convert the speaker wires into RCA wires to plug into the amp.

I've done the install and according to the local Circuit City it is correct, but I'm getting a lot of pink noise through the system. Anybody ever use a line output converter and have similar problems/situation? Any ideas or suggestions?
