Window Tints?

Does anyone know if window tints are classed as a modification by insurance companies?

Also is the legal level of tint something like 20%? Whats the average level of basic light smoke with most tinting companies?

Thanks :)

the uk law on tints is that the drivers and passenger front windows can only be lightly tinted and on the windscreen none apart from a 6" strip at the top.the rear windows and back screen can be done as dark as you want them.so if you follow the law you do not need to tell the insurance company about it because after all you are only tinting to prevent sunglare and deter thieves(hee-hee).20% sounds like maybe pushing it on the front but the firm putting it in should advise you on that.:D

Just got back from the pub and was talking to my mate who has a calibra his back windows are done in moonglow and he declared this to his insurance cost £30.The reason he did this was moonglow is expensive and if some toe-rag puts your window through it is covered on his glass cover and does not affect your no claims bonus. But my tints only cost £250 fitted so i did not bother and my car has gone through 2 insurance claims and did not get asked about once.

Just looked at jerrys pics very nice but the front is totally illegal. Its totally up to you but we could not get away with that round here.In scarborough tcs round here carry police mechs at least twice a month and if it is not legal on tuesday you will have your day in court.:(

Thanks guys!!! :D

I really want to get mine done, might just do it & hope for the best!!!

Sorted - thats quite interesting that you've had a claim & not had a problem.

Guessing £150-£250 is about the right price range?

Thats spot on in the price range any more and they are taking the mickey unless you have moonglow put in.I don't know if you have seen that before it is black on a day time and at night you flick a switch and it turn a neon blue and flash's to the beat of your tunes. On my insurance i have declared pretty much all of my mods, but if i need some new glass put in i assume i will have to get it tinted myself unless they are feeling generous that day.

Hi this post is for sorted avensis. I can quote you that the front wind screen is totally legal. Toyota wont let a car which has be sold by them. Leave the forecourt illegal.

Toyota took my car to a company called bishopsgate auto tint. Which is a company toyota regularly use.

They are uk's leading window tinting specialists. Iam sure that they would know what is legal from illegal mate! so I can say that my car is fully legal on the road mate. But hey thanks for the concern anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

Insurance companies take the view that modifications to the car that increase it desirability or nickability must be declared. I would ask your insurance company regardless of comments on here. Ask them before you Shell out for the tints incase you don't like what they say. If there is any way they can crawl out of a payout they will find it. Better to be safe than sorry.

You joining the Staines Massive then?

Keepin' it real.

lol @ staines massive! :D

My insurers won't cover any mods so i was just wondering if window tints were classed as mods - but i'm guessing so!!!

I'll prob check with the company anyway!

Thanks guys!

Just checked with north yorkshire police traffic dept. Here's what they said"BACK OFF THE B PILLAR CAN BE AS DARK AS YOU WANT. FORWARD OF THE B PILLAR CAN BE DONE IN A TINT OF NOT MORE THAN 40% AND IF IT IS 40% IT IS WISE TO CARRY THE RECEIPT SAYING IT IS ONLY 40%.THE FRONT SCREEN CANNOT BE TINTED AT ALL APART FROM A STRIP NOT GREATER THAN 6" AT THE TOP."so if you like check to see what your local police say.It would be nice to see if they differ and mention you are from a large motoring group so they don't keep you on hold forever.
