Thanks cmia, I did find it

However on connecting to my new OBD2 tool it indicating "link error" and therefore does not give out any codes. I have used the OBD2 tool on the chrysler and it gave me the codes. I wonder what I have to do to get the comms.

Your Avensis is the early type. The car has built in on board diagnostics which has been carried over from the Carina.

Get a piece of wire and link socket 4 and 13 of the OBD socket. The 4th terminal from the left is on the upper row, whilst the 13 terminal is on the 5th from the left on the bottom row.

Now turn the key to ignition, but don't start the car.

You should see EML, ABS and SRS flash. They will have a constant flash unless one was illuminated before the test.

If the EML light is illuminated, then it will flash a code e.g. 21. The flash sequence will be two quick flashes then one flash, then a space before repeating the sequence. This means there is a fault with the Lean burn (O2) sensor.

If you search my previous posts, or Google Carina on board diagnostic codes you will be able to obtain a list of the codes.

Code 21 is the most common code for the Avensis that activates the EML.

Hi

After a fair run without a fault I drove my 1998 Avensis and parked it as normal. After some 4hrs I tried to start it and the starter was cranking but the engine did not fire up. I checked for a spark on all the HT leads and was nothing. The coils have the 12V supply when key is turned on. I also tested my HT coils together with the leads on a friend's Avensis and his engine fired up OK. The RAC guy that checked it was convinced that it was a crank shaft position sensor fault as the rev counter was not bouncing up as the engine cranked. I purchased that and fitted it but the engine did not fire. All fuses have been checked and non faulty. My OBDII scanner flashes code 12 on the engine management light and that relates to Rev counter. I must say I wish to keep this lovely motor running but now I am in unknown territory and asking for help on what to do without incurring dealership prices . Which other tests can I do or which module can I check and how?

Please help I am desperate.
