Here is a video showing how to repair the transmission ECU on early 2001-2003 RAV4's. This guy sent his ECU off to be repaired and then looked at the board to see what his $250 paid for. All he could find were 6 resistors that had been replaced. This would be a simple repair for anyone skilled with a soldering iron:

The resistance of the new parts is printed on the case, 820 and 330 are 82R and 33R.

For me I'd want to be sure these were the only mods before attempting a DIY.

Parts don't always change colour making them stand out, and some won't be marked with the value because they are too small.

There could also have been a complimentary software update.
