Auris Big Problem...

Hi guys, got a big issue, any pointers will be helpful.....

My car, Toyota Auris, 2.0 D4D, 2008, 43k, dealer service history. The car was last serviced (Oil, air, fuel and oil filter) in December.

On Sat night it was making a tick tick noise, coming from engine, near the alternator belt/coolant container area. Whilst in neutral, I rev'ed the engine (I now know never to rev whilst stationary), loads of black smoke/soot came out of exhaust along with a with a bang noise (like misfire). There was a big black mark on the road from the smoke/soot. The tick tick noise went away so I thought I'll rev the engine once more, same thing happened again but this time the engine shut off. Now the car refuses to start, it tries to start but never turns over.

The belt on alternator is chewed, one of the cable near the alternator was unplugged, the plastic casing/adaptor on cable is smashed but cable itself seems fine. Anyway I've got a mechanic mate who will have a look at it later today, he normally does German cars but if its beyond him then will take it to dealers to get bum rapped.

I think the tick tick noise was from a cable that was slightly touching the alternator belt. When I reved it, it went away but on the second rev, it snapped the cable and bits of belt.

I've disconnected the Battery, reset the ecu to no avail. There is no code shown when hooked upto diagnostic code reader. I took video/pictures of before and after....any ideas....

Unsual do you have an engine under tray? If not its likey you have road debris such as a stone or twig causing it to fail.

I have read on here before the water pump seizing causing alternator belt to fail the way you have described.

In regards of the black soot and going bang, its likely a boost pipe to the turbo or the intercooler has come apart simply reconnect if you can get access to it.

If you have breakdown membership they will do it free for you saving cost on garage labour cost :)

Keep us posted.

I called the AA out, he spent hr and half on it. He hooked it up to his computer and gave the code of: P0335+ Crankshaft position sensor A circuit. He connected the lose wires together near the alternator belt which turned out to be crankshaft sensor. He did speak to someone at the office who looked up Toyotas systematic diagrams. He did say there should be 5v coming from the wiring loom but hes not reading any. He checked all the fuses and all checked out fine.

Its with Toyota now, let see what they say......
