Brake Calipers - Improvement To Appearance Wanted

I was going to ask this anyway, but one of Charlies pictures just posted prompted me to actually do it!

On my front Calipers I have a lot of 'chalkieness' I would describe it as. I think it is maybe road salt/grit reacting with the metal of the unpainted bare metal caliper, and basic washing doesn't make any difference.

But Charlies T180's Caliper is pristine ....

So - I guess a question for Charlie primarily - what do I need to do to get - and keep - the calipers looking decent like above? Is it a particular cleaning product or a coating required?

Cheers

I think its called a wire brush and wire wool, to get rid of the aluminium corrosion (chalky stuff)

You must have aluminium calipers as opposed to cast iron?

And then some silver paint, maybe hammerite, but knowing Charlie he probably had them powder coated, in Aluminium fake

I used a strong mix of Autosmart G101 as a degreaser.. Then its just a case of removing any flaky bits and any surface rust with a fine grain wire brush... Paint is hammerite smooth silver and the finish lasts very well indeed and is Not affected by heat from the brakes.

With Your car there will be no flaky or rusty parts or patches at all I would think so a good degreaser is all that will be needed...

If doing all four wheels and callipers allow a day. Less in Your case cos no wire brushing will be needed...

There are many dedicated calliper paints but none come anywhere near the quality and durability of hammerite..

Forgot to say.. Powdercoating would mean stripping all the pistons and seal bleed nipples ect from the calliper bodies. And as the coating is so much thicker the seal areas and every bolt hole would have to be filed back to the original size before re assembly ....

Thanks Charlie,

your "before" pic is like mine are. I have tried "caliper paint" in the past and it has been worse then a waste of time. I'll give that a go as the difference in looks in yours really is substantial

Once the wheels are back on and the pads clear the swept areas on the discs ( It does this without any problems at all !!) it all looks far better !! The callipers on the jag are notorious for the poor finish and way they degrade if left alone....

Kit Calliper paint is absolute rubbish !! Hammerite will last for years and the bonus is its cheap !! Please make sure You get the smooth variety though or it looks horrible

Only pics I can find with a wheel on ...

May as well clean the backs of the wheels while Your at it..

Rav4Brakes006.jpg

From memory the tourque settings for the wheel nuts is 110 NM but I drop this to the more delicate locking nut to 90NM. I will check for sure if You like ?

The silver stuff on the threads on the hubs is not paint its Molyslip Aluslip.. Its like coperslip but as My car goes near sea water is better.. Coperslip if allowed to get in touch with salt water starts galvanic corrosion,, The copper particles start to corrode...

And that is the mostest useless bit of info You've heard this Year ..... :D

I like useless info especially the bit about the copperslip and salt water, I didn't know that have you a link to that silver stuff you use?

I am currently in the process of cleaning the Hippos alloys one by one so any tips welcome.

Back of my wheels are pretty clean in fact :) The design of the T/SR wheels is such that if the wheels are not cleaned outside AND inside, the still look dirty, so no choice!

My WSB Wheels are a bit poorly inside though. They have deep scrapes inside and I *think* this may have been from a previous owner or tyre company scraping the wheel position (LR, RR, etc) with a nail for TPMS sensor reasons .

As they are off the car now (winter ones), I have the opportunity to fix that a bit before the next winter comes :)

Not got a torque spanner so go by feel of "seems tight enough"!

Cheers!

Here You go Matey

Its great for where some wheels stick up tight around the hubs. Just apply some with a small brush and it stops them sticking on..

Nice work Charlie, no doubt you were going to leave your's in a bad looking conditio.

I've did mine too sometime ago in silver as yours but was insisted by my son to do them in red which I had to wire brush them out again and sprayed them in red which became very sporty look and I do like them.

Paint warmed to thin it then applied by brush then warmed with a heat gun on low.. This takes out any brush marks or any signs it has been done with a brush and leaves a perfectly brush free finish..... Paint also sticks like salt to a blanket ! ( That was not a smart phone spell error)

Cheers Charlie. I'll give it a blast as mine are looking a bit worse for wear.

Stu.. I have seen some of those fitted and Errrr Cough cough... Errrr well they look Errr Well Errr......................................crap.. sorry.

Two things also is that the calliper would then be housed inside the plastic cover so would not dry out as they should ? This would I think encourage corrosion to components that already seem to corrode when allowed to dry naturally...

Secondly while some may like red or yellow callipers which I am not keen on those covers are a wee bit Barry boy ??

Perhaps it was the bit "Lets rock the world Baby" that was the final nail ???

TBH they are not for me either, for all the reasons you mention, I have seen them on fleabay in lots of different colors and not all with Brembo on, you can of course get real "brembo" calipers for the Rav (if you have deep pockets) The idea of gluing something onto my brakes does not appeal, 15 years ago i painted my original Ravs calipers + DRUMS with hamerite and had no problem...Stew

On PC and played the video (must be flash one?) (but sound is off, so no idea what muzak it was - terrible spelling/grammar though!) and got my order in

Well, maybe not. It doesn't actually LOOK that bad at all for the right vehicle, but I am with Mr Hero - gluing big lumps onto a brake caliper? No thanks!

See link to urban dictionary for meaning of "pimping" (No 11 is an interesting one ) -

As for rap music, well all of it is pants with the exception of (note, to younger members, your generation never invented the stuff) the

original stuff like Sugarhill Gang, Gary Bird, Grand Master Flash et al which started in the 1970's. ie see video -

Yeah, rap is spelt properly with a silent 'c'.

Brake calipers - cover them up? I wonder what that does to the thermal management? Certainly won't make it better.
