Cylinder Head Components

I have removed the cylinder head from a Rav 4 petrol S-reg - when removed there was a small spring and a small silver coloured cylindrical item (possibly a non-return valve) it was approx 5mm in diamater by 9mm in length - I cannot find where this item has come from. Can someone please advise me as soon as possible please. I have spoken to numerous people and garages and no one seems to know. thanks very much
