Strange Whistle

Good evening

I have a 1998 Avensis 1.8 gls . It has developed a strange whistle. The noise comes from a circular black plastic box approx 3 inches long 2 inches dia. clipped to the rearside of the engine block (facing the engine bulkhead . It is fed with a (vacuum) hose from the inlet manifold. A short hose then runs to a sensor. Can any wise person tell me what the box/sensor is/does, and hopefully the part number
