Avensis 2.0 Diesel Engine Running Too Lean

Hi all.

Just had taken my Avenis 2.0 Diesel for it's first MOT today. When I picked it up there was an adviory note which said 'Engine running too lean to obtain an emissions reading'

Wondering if this is something to be concerned about and whether I should get it checked out?

Cheers

A strange comment for a diesel car as the emissions are not checked only a diesel smoke test is carried out, it almost appears as though your diesel was given a petrol emissions test ?

I think it's whoever wrote the note that needs checking out.

As Devon Aygo says, "running too lean" just doesn't make any sense on a Diesel. Unlike petrol engines, they don't have a throttle, so the engine always sucks in as much air as it can and the mixture varies wildly depending on the load.

If it was my car, I'd give them a ring and ask them what they were on about. Perhaps it's just their way of saying it's a diesel. After all, they shouldn't have issued an MOT if they thought it needed a test they hadn't been able to do.

Cheers,

Gary.

And how can it be too lean? Diesel engines always run as lean as physically possible because they always pull in a full cylinder of air!

id be round telling the garage thanks for the mot but the fud you employ trying to carry out an emissions' test to a diesel and having the nerve to give an advisory for it needs a kick up the ****.

even if its wrong and its too lean for the smoke test to pick up, why the advisory aint that the holy grail for a diesel to run as clean as poss and how we are getting all the crap on our motors to meet euro5 emmisions
