Help! Insurance Advice Needed

Hi. Been seriously looking into buying a mkIV Supra Twin Turbo over last few weeks. Plenty of awesome cars about but I'm getting some grief with insurance. Some simply wont quote. Others are quoting over £1200 for an import £800 - £900 for UK spec (fully comp). Company called A PLAN who specialise in Jap imports quoted over £2000! I'd just like to know if this is what I should expect to be paying or whether I'm looking in the wrong place!

I'm 32, full no claims with one small claim back in 2001 (NCD protected supposedly. Hmm..) and one SP30 from same year. I'm totally new to Supras and Imports so I apologise if you've had this question a million times before, but any info or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks!

Hi big al. Try tesco's insurance i have beening with them for quite awhile now and they have beaten all over rivals every year so far. I wouldn't try elephant . com. A friend of my is still having trouble with that company for nearly a year now. After putting in for a claim he made.

Also welcome to the club mate ;)

Good luck jerry!!

I've never had any problems with Elephant and everyone I know whose claimed has been more than happy with the service. They have also always been the cheapest for my quotes.

Only reason I'l be changing to Dorset this year is the free track day cover...

To be honest the quotes don't seem all that unreasonable considering the car.

I too found Tesco to be good. Elephant are about the same but do not offer monthly payments if you prefer that method. You have to pay in one hit.

Tesco are giving good rates on Imports to try and get the new custom. They are supposedly running a loss on them..... if insurance companies ever truely run a loss.

I'm paying just over a grand for my imported supra MKIV insurance (fully comp off course) from Bell Direct, and I've just turned 26... with full no claims bonus... the problem that I've had is that most companies are not willing to insure me because of my age. Some of the companies that did, quoted me outragous amounts (A-Plan was amongst them).

Ur quote seems quite reasonable but I think u can get cheaper if you shop around... I must have rang over 20 companies and obviously tried to get them to beat each other... here is a list of companies that gave me reasonable quote (starting from the cheapest first):

Bell Direct 0800 140180

Elephant 0870 0131072

Budjet 0800 801954

Privilage (Same company as Direct line) 0113 243777888

Direct line 0845 2468701

Adrian Flux 08700 777888

Hyperperformance 0870 6084312

Tesco 0845 3009900

Good luck... hope u can get a reasonable quote within ur budget... the Supra really is a fantastic car, and well worth the 'investment'

Thanks for all replies, and to Kash for the numbers I'll try them tomorrow. Bell Direct quoted me £1300 on an import. I think the claim I made in 2001 is the thing that is bumping up my quotes. I asked one of the companies I rang why this is the case if I'm paying extra on my premium to protect my no claims? She said irrespective of the fact that I have protected no claims (and pay for the privelige) most companies will load the premium because of the claim. Which is nice.

  • 5 weeks later...

i've got a 2000 celica gts and after the loan now i'm paying about $750 for 6 months with a 1000 deductible and full coverage which if you know the codes i've got A-C-D(1000)-G(1000)-H-U with state farm insurance. i'm 21 now and that is when it dropped from 1100 every 6 months. i know it isn't a high horsepowered supra but maybe it will give you and idea of what things cost

Does Tesco cover N. Ireland?

Just to get things in perspective. I'm paying £915 fully comp for a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo Grp 8(Import). I'm 28 with full no claims. %$(ing N. Ireland insurance sucks.....

If I was getting a quote under a grand for a Supra I'd buy one tomorrow!

Hi yby i would have thought that you will be able to take out insurance in ireland as well. Haven't you got tesco stores in ireland?

Yeah we do but sometimes you get that "small print" which states excludes N. Ireland. I'll give them a shout and see anyway.

Yep tried them. No N. Ireland cover any more. AAAHHHHHGGGGGGG!!!!!!

The best quote so far was got by playing Elephant and Admiral off each other. Got my policy down to £789.60 fully comp no claims protected.

Looks like that might be as good as it gets.

Hi yby It seems to me that you really haven't got a lot to choose from out in N. Ireland. Why is that? Still looks like you have got a good deal in the end. Nice won!!! ;)

There was plenty of choice if I didn't drive a JAP Import. Can only find approx 5 company's that will quote for N. Ireland and a Jap Import.

Hey Zee,

Is Adrian Flux specialist in modified cars etc?

Would they give me higher cover for electrical modifications - Alarm / Hi Fi etc on top of the normal value of the car and modified parts? I'm with Direct Line currently who cover me for £1000 - this wouldnt even cover the value of the alarm system so I really need to insure the alarm and hi-fi seperatly or use someone specialist in modified cars.

Thanks

Steve.

Hi Steve,

I would advise you to ring them - but they have a specialist "modification" arm of the business.... They deal with Imports, Mods, Audio - the full spectrum.

Give them a call, and ask the questions - theay are a good bunch and very friendly...

Bell Direct did it for me :) .

I phoned about 30 companies with quotes from £2800 to £7000 (that's right - and with a £650 excess!!)

Then I got a quote of £1500 from Bell. Now I can afford the car and the paint job!

Too much hard work guys you should just log in to www.confused.com (its a UK site) and fill in all your details and let your PC do all the work, it will contact all those companies previously mentioned and more........ then email you results back starting at the cheapest and give you a direct link AND A REF: NUMBER so they cant bottle out of the quote they gave you.

It takes about an Hour before you get your full response, although you get an intermediate one in about 30 mins.

:D
