Just out of sheer idle curiosity, what is this part of the air filter on the 2.0 VVTI engine actually for? (circled in yellow!)

I've worked on lots of engines, but in recent years I've seen a few of these sort of chambers appearing on petrol cars intake systems, are they some kind of way of improving the airflow?

Its a resonance chamber, fitted to reduce air intake noise.
