Speedometer

Speedometer had been making squeeking noises for 5 to 6 years especially in cold weather. It has stopped squeeking (good :) ) but speedometer stopped working...bad :( My research shows 2 possible problems..1. Speedometer cable 2. Gear in speedometer itself.

Question: What is the procedure to getting into the speedometer box or do I have to. If I pull the cable from the trans side and its broken won't a piece be left behind?

Unfortunatly it will be needed for emission testing otherwise I would live without it and go with the flow
