Ignition Issue

Hi Guys,

I'm having the following issue with my 1996 Hilux Surf (Auto), any advice welcome.  Please note: The car has new Battery & new starter motor and is service every 10k.

Temperamental starting issue. This issue is completely random, the car starts fine 90% of the time. This issue was the reason I replaced the stater motor on my mechanics recommendation but has not solved the problem.

Sequence of events:

1. To start the car from park position, I turn the key to the second to last notch to warm the glow plugs before starting the engine. All dash lights are on & radio areal comes up.

2. I then turn the key full to engage the starter motor. 90% of the time works fine and the car starts perfectly.

3. 10% of the time the starter motor does not engage. The is no 'click' or sound from the engine.

4. If I turn the key on and off from the last notch multiple times rapidly the starter motor will eventually engage and the car starts.

All the mechanics and auto electricians I have approached say that it could be 100 different things and they need to have a look at the car whilst it is playing up. As it happens totally randomly it is impossible to get it to a garage at the time of it happening.

Could be a faulty ignition barrel. The electrical contacts within the barrel can wear or tarnish over time, causing issues.

Thanks mate, I guess it's a process of elimination.
