Auris passenger footwell

Hi I just picked up my Auris 63 plate but have noticed that the footwell in the passenger side is spongyits like there’s a gap bettthe floor and the carpet any help please is this normal?

Yes. Sadly, in my experience, this is normal.

Can anyone tell me what the removable panel in the passenger footwell of my 2017 Auris is covering? There seems to be some kind of filter behind it. I cannot find any information of what it is, frequency of change etc.
