Starter problem

My car didn't start today when I was about to drive home from work. Everything worked perfectly( lights, central locking etc) until I tried to start the engine. Nothing happened, just some clicking from the beneath the steering wheel. This problem also happened to the last owner( my father) and we tried several solutions, including changing the bittom part of the ignition switch. That time, everybody said it was the starter engine, but that was wrong since he towed the car to a Toyota dealership and they fixed it cheap. He can't remember what they did except that it was something about "bad connection". I' m checking with them tomorrow but if anyone has any tips before I can get in touch with them it will be appreciated( they are notorious for their slow response time). I will also try with a spare key and charge up the battery  The car is a 2005 1.8 fuel Avensis estate

well first thing to check would be your connections and your earths check for corrosion and clean if  necessary and then if not it coukd actually be the starter or the solenoid failing i took a starter out if a hilux for my friend after it no longer wanted to start even though power was there and connections ok turned out to be solenoid which we fixed and i put it back in for him
