Do I need to clean the ERG valve as part of regular maintenance?

Hello,

I have a 2009 Avensis T27 with the 2.0 D4D 1ADFTV engine in it. It's a great car and I want it to last as long as possible.

Recently a video popped up on my YouTube playlist with an Irish guy cleaning out the ERG valve in his T27 which got my thinking: does mine also need doing?

I haven't been suffering any ERG-related problems (poor performance, rough idling, increased fuel consumption etc). But there is a bit of white smoke when it's first started up.

The mileage is 110,000 miles.

Do you think the ERG valve should be cleaned as part of regular maintenance? I bought the car second hand so I don't know if the previous owner had it done.

Thanks

I clean the EGR valve on mine (T25) as part of my maintenance schedule, it always needs it.

It’s certainly worth taking it off to check as it only takes five minutes.

Thanks. Are you sure it only takes 5 minutes? All the videos on YouTube made it look a lot longer process than that!

That’s mine, I could probably remove it in less than two minutes.

that video you have seen with the irish guy cleaning it out he took of the manifold also to clean that out tbh that full clean would be better to do take the whole thing off and clean it out as tbh no good cleaning out on thing while the manifold if full of that soot etc

At that milage I would give it a clean prevention is better than cure.

Yes, especially if you mostly urban drive, I do it approximately at 7k intervals and it makes a reasonable difference

i think you should also use some fuel additives in regular use.

Do you take off the egr and intake manifold give it a good cleaning out then put it all back cleaning it at 7k. Seems 2 be a handling of a job.my last car I disconnected the small black pipe that made the egr work but my last car did not come with those dam dpf systems .plus I had vcds (VW software) so I went into adaptions and turned down the values of the egr and it turned off. The check engine light on the dash. I would love to do something like that to my Toyota but can't find a way around it without wrecking my dpf

Re your question Joe: No. I only have ever done EGR cleans. I want to do a manifold removal and deep clean as my T25 (195000km) is begining to suffer hesitancy or coolant loss and I can't diagnose why.

Ps. I did have my cat removed and electro cleaned about 10k ago

That's a great video. He even gives the torque values for the bolts. Must do this on mine 140k km but need to get hold of a torque wrench that does those low values. Would a clean egr and manifold improve fuel consumption?
