Can anyone clarify if 3S-FE engine ( In RAV4 1998 ) has hydraulic tappets or are they shims?

Mine are quite noisy & dealer has told me they ARE Hydraulic, however, the user manual gives valve clearances which suggests they are NOT.

Thanks

So if the Rav4 runs a 3S engine does that mean you could drop in the 3S-GTE engine from a GT4?? That would be fun  and you could surprise a few people at the traffic lights

Treuno,

Thanks for the info.

Maybe it's me being a little pedantic! If they do need adjustment is it camshaft off?

No you dont hav to remove the cams to do so! But there are Special Servive Tools to remove the shims!!

The worst part about it is that if they do need adjusting the shims arnt cheap!!

Glad to of helped! :)

Just following the thread..my 2003 RAV4 VVTI auto when it's cold has a sort of tappet noise under light or normal acceleration. Seems when the engine is put on any load. It almost disappears after a few miles when the engine gets up to temperature. Anyone know the cause - and whether this is something that needs attention (and how costly/ difficult)?
