1992 Corolla Crescendo Ignition System

it started slowly now and again but doing it all the time now...

Whenever I try to start my engine now I get a clicking sound frpm whjat appears to be under the engine... The engine is not even turning over and the start motor isn't even starting up... it's like it is somewhere between the ignition from where the key is turning and just before the starter motor...

I have to keep turning the key until the starter motor finally starts up... but obviously summing is going down here and not good for me to be starting the engine like this the whole time... and sometimes I turn the key on and off quite quick coz it takes so long sometimes for the starter motor to start that I am scared I may damage that in the end too...

I have now got one of those Hayes manuals so will look through there but has anyone else had anything similiar? Or can anyone recommend anyhting? Help!
