Toyota HiAce 2004 left ABS Sensor "discontinued" How to Fix?

Hello, Toyota Owner's Club. Com

Well, it’s been some months now and having joined various forums and exhaustive internet searches, still haven’t sourced this Front Left ABS Sensor (part no: 89543-26130). I sent out three letters to Toyota HQ Japan without response, and around thirty emails to breaker’s yards, eBay and ABS specialists worldwide, plus three orders from Japan processed but cancelled as they then couldn’t get the part.
The best chance I have now is a breaker selling parts for another HiAce, but as there’s no guarantee it will fit and with a hefty refund penalty, I’m hoping we have some Wiz Mechanics or Toyota Masters who can answer my queries below please:

  • What other models or years of HiAce should I be looking for to acquire a used ABS Sensor, or even a complete wheel drum as an extreme measure that would also fit mine, please?
  • Any other suggestions regards fixes or get-arounds would be Most Welcome. Thank You

      My Vehicle: Reg 2004 below

My vehicle details.
Toyota HiAce (not sure what model).
First registered 01.02.2004
Petrol fuelled on a 3370cc engine
The VIN number is VCH28-0002413 (the number plate is on an import so invalid for parts)

As always, Thank You for any advice that may help to sort this out!
Sincerely Yours, David

Granvia or Grand Hiace I suspect.?

Maybe a long shot but I know that Poplar Motors in Chesterfield import and convert quite a few of these models..they just might be able to help or guide you.

Build date is more important than first registration in the case of imports

Going by the frame number

Grand Hiace

Built - 01/2004

Model - VCH28K-QFSDK(C)  4 door, 2 seat van

Grade - DX

Colour - 199

Engine - 5VZFE (EFI)

Gearbox - Auto

89543-26130 is correct

99 - 02 use 89543-26050

I see you have been looking for a while going by the posts on the net, only just seen your post from June on here, the Celica has the exact same issue they just don't make the parts any more

Not sure on your skill level, but check the resistance of the sensor, what are the code(s) you are getting

Thank You Neil, and also to Bob for taking the time to try and help me with information and advice, as it's been extremely rare or non-forthcoming. If only I knew which other models or years of this van's ABS would fit mine, I could actually take a punt on buying a used part if I can locate one.

I Very much Appreciate your advice and shall contact J. Garage also.

My skill levels Bob, expired once they started computerising cars and adding all this stuff which almost renders old-school mechanics like myself obsolete now.

I shall of course leave a post once and If I ever sort this, as I must if, in spite of my age, I still intend to perform as an aspiring musician before I reach retirement age next year!

As always then, Safe Journeys to you all!

Sincerely Yours

David

It only fits VCH28, but that doesn't mean it is not listed under a different number under for other models

found a Chinese seller on AliExpress - but that seem too good to be true

if the van has been sitting, the reluctor ring (toothed ring) may have rusted up, a quick look at the knuckle shows it is part of the bearing carrier/hub

you may be able to do something with a sensor from a Dyna 89543-25010 or Regiusace 89543-26070

Hiya Rob,

And I have to say that first off you Really Know your stuff! And secondly, you've offered more "Hope" than I've had for some months now about ever being able to sort this, and for that, I'm mighty Thankful!

I wasn't aware of your information regarding the build date being more important. I've just emailed JDM and will offer this information regarding an alternative depending on their reply.

Regarding the Ali Express link, if you have a link to that I'll give it a go, as a few months back I took a chance on a part number just a few digits out, and although it arrived without issue within weeks at only £23, isn't even close to the part I can see on the rear of my wheel. But being as Desperate as I am, would take a punt on that if we can match the part number

My van hasn't been sitting but is in local use, but I'm concerned about future issues that might arise! I don't recognise the tooth ring information and photo you've kindly sent, so attached the images of my left and right sensors. The left one seems to have been stripped of its covering by the mechanic who is responsible for this mess and offered Zero assistance, and you can see that it should have a rubber or something as viewed on the right-hand side ABS. It also looks like it's going to be hard to get out and replace, but with the cables still in place, I still can't figure out why this should not work and cause the dash light to come on...

It goes without saying Rob that I'm Eternally Thankful for the amount of effort and "Goodwill" you've shown me, and let's hope I can report back a Happy ending so others too, might benefit from your/our efforts.

As always, safe journeys

Sincerely YoursRightABSSensorwCover.thumb.jpg.428f4509dac215deabaeb16ada316d72.jpgLeftABSSensorwithoutCover.thumb.jpg.d4c992d41056f9adc6158c62472ff726.jpg

Sorry for the late reply, i don't scroll down to this end of the forum often

That sensor is utterly destroyed, the rust just crushes the sensors

to put it simply, the sensor counts the teeth on the ring on the back of the hub (hidden by the brake disc)

still looking for you, looking at shopee (asia's version of Buyee) but not getting far

It all offers me, Hope Bob!

I'm slowly now emailing out previous discontinued suppliers, to push to try and find which Hiace registrations (or year) would be compatible with my 2004 so that I can try an online breakers yard, which seems one of the few options left.

Again, I'm wiser now than before your message. Much Appreciated, just in the replying for me.

Bless!

David

I listed the knuckle above that will use the same hub assembly ergo the abs sensor has to be the same physical dimensions

I'm not sure on the differences for the VCH28 99-02 and 2002 onwards, it may just be the plug on the end of the cable that's different

89543-26050

i know it's an expensive gamble

Hi Bob, I offered that point of enquiry regarding the build date to Amayama who previously had to refund me, and this was their reply:

Hello,
The supplier informed us that only 89543-26130  (Discontinued part) is compatible for your car.
Substitute numbers are not available.
Apologies for the inconvenience

So I'll offer the same suggestion to J's Garage who also had to refund a previous unobtainable ABS purchase, who are more breakers specialists

And you are right, as although the alternate 89543-26050 is available, it isn't cheap, and and selling as non-returnable for around £300 out of Japan.
I find your point about this ABS sensor likely being the same dimensions Encouraging, but find today, that few mechanics will take on anything other than a straight swap of parts Sadly, certainly on my Hiace I've had to do certain things myself previously. But if I can find a cheaper one of these may have to take a chance on it.

Thanks Again!

Sadly this is a problem with imports no one want to work on them, that sensor is not coming out easy drill it and pull with a slide hammer, you can clean the bore with a 5-6mm shaft with a slot in it to take some emery cloth (acts like a flap disc on a stick)

Hi Bob.

I’ve found a spec sheet not dissimilar to one of yours previously, using my VIN number which shows that my model of HiAce was produced from 1999/07 to 2005/01 if I’ve read it correctly.

This link: https://toyota.epc-data.com/granvia/vch28k/163691/electric/8414/89543/

shows that as they do, they changed the front L/H sensor from 26050 to 26130 from 05/2002.

  1. So, mine being production 2004/01 I guess I'd need a “Used” breaker yard part from a vehicle registered 05/2002 to 01/2005 and hope it works…
  2. Or, take a chance on the previous sensor which, may be open to slight modification, and does make sense of your suggestion the bore size could be the same.

There was even a late suggestion the right-hand front for my year may fit with modification, but again, there’s a lack of information forthcoming about what that might be. If it’s a plug then it could be more doable, but I have a feeling it could be the fitment casing and bolt placement, but the mechanic stripped my left side so I've nothing to use.

I feel bad that I’ve taken up so much of your time Bob, and I am struggling over this, but your Generosity of time and information has at least offered “Hope”!

Thank You also for your informed approach as to how I might be able to work on the part once located. It does make sense to me, if Daunting.

Safe Journeys and long may you “Prosper”!

David

Your facelift van is a 05/2002 - 01/2005

As i said above the pre 2002 may be the same it just uses a different connector as the hubs and knuckle are the same - there is no telling if it's electrically different

due to age, finding a used one is a tough ask as it's likely just as fragile or rusted in place as yours
