MOT Failure Auris Halfords

Hi

Took my Car for MOT on Friday to Halfords, it failed on a few things lights/spring coil/brake pipe corroded so its all fixed now

However on the Advisory I had this:

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Nearside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin 4 mm (1.1.13 (a) (ii))
  • Offside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin 4 mm (1.1.13 (a) (ii))

So now after getting it fixed and doing a retest this time it Fails on the following:

Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects):

  • Offside Front Brake pad(s) less than 1.5 mm thick (1.1.13 (a) (ii))

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Front Brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
  • Nearside Front Brake pad(s) wearing thin (1.1.13 (a) (ii))

There was 3 days difference between the retest and by then only 30 extra miles was done, so i really cant figure out how the Brake pads all of a sudden wears thin in such short day!

I've contacted CS at Halfords to see what they have to say about that!

4mm is thin??

Don't brake pads normally start with 8-10mm??

Can you look at the pads yourself and see how thick they are? Should be easy if you have alloys - One downside of my steel rims is it's a lot harder to inspect the brakes!!

Find a recommended local independent MOT tester if possible.

I'm quite happy to use Halfords shop for bulbs, oil, batteries etc when there's nowhere else open, but I wouldn't touch their garage division with a bargepole. I once foolishly allowed them to hardwire a Dashcam kit in one of my cars, and they cocked it up so badly that the car would not start afterwards and had to be trailered to a dealer (at Halfords expense) to be fixed!

Avoid big names for MOT's as they are exaggerated about rust or some other things....I found out on my own money unfortunately, I use a local MOT test garage and been very happy with the MOT's so far

Use an MOT only place in the future or recommended small indy one.

I do MOT at pro tyres as well as wheel alignment and ac re gas.
I like cars but dislike garages , that’s for sure and I have good reasons for it.

I've always used small independent MOT places. They tend to be more expensive but work out cheaper in the long run.

Places like Halfords and other Autocentres may offer cheaper MOT's but tend to create work for themselves, depending on the branch. Some branches will inform the police if you drive away after an MOT failure and not leave the car for repair.
