Cost to change of pistons on 1NRFE engine

Hello there,

Ive got a Verso-S 1.3 automatic as as you may know this engine has a faulty piston rings and burns engine oil so much and later Toyota has introduced a updated version to these piston rings, I am now thinking to get mine changed too.

Apparently Toyota has done thos change free of charge some years ago and I believe now they don't do it without a fee.

Has anyone of you got their toyota piston changed at a fair price and if you have done how much that cost you?

Any recommendations to a mechanic or a garage who are specialised in piston change work in London or Hertfordshire please? TIA!

It's a big job, practically a full engine rebuild - The labour costs will dwarf the cost of the parts!

I've heard it said it may be cheaper to buy an engine block with all the revised parts already on it than modify an old one...

That's where it gets tricky - The easiest place to get one is from Toyota, as they still sell those blocks to my knowledge. It would be a new pristine engine and should require significantly less labour since it's just a swap; I think the standard is just the 3/4 block, so the head would need to be swapped over from the old engine, needing at least new stretch bolts/studs and gasket etc..

However, I'm guessing that would be pretty expensive too - Would need to get some quotes for the rebuild to see which is more expensive!

The other option is a refurbed or used one, but the tricky bit there is finding one that is confirmed to have had the mods done already - Most breakers won't be able to tell, but I have seen the odd one advertised on eBay that explicitly said it had the updated parts when I was looking (My Mk2 had the same problem...), but how trustworthy those are I couldn't say...

a new engine or rebuild will outweigh the value of the car. at this point if it's not smoking badly px the car + the money you would have spent on a rebuild

The work on the car due to its age and if it's in the 60-100k mile range you looking at a minimum of having the block and crank checked, if it has been burning oil for any amount of time the bore will need to be deglazed, then you have while you in there jobs like the water pump and clutch (if manual) again if it's up in the miles your doing the timing chain

A new long block if Toyota has one will be in the £4-6K range
