Noise underneath car after Catloc impact

Anyone like me who had the privilege of forking out a load of dosh for a Catloc will know that it reduces the clearance under the car, and this can spell trouble when you forget or just meet a particularly nasty road surface or speed hump.

Mine got caught the other day where there was a bit of a drop between the tarmac at the edge of the road and the pull-in where I was going to park. Now I've got an intermittent rattle (a sort of deep, wobbling/vibrating/juddery sound that lasts for a few seconds) under the car from time to time when I move off or corner, which sounds to be coming from around front-left. I've done my best to inspect underneath but currently have no ramps or axle stands so it's not easy. I can see where it caught as one end of the retaining bar is slightly bent just near the bolt, but there's absolutely no play in the Catloc plate if I try moving it back & forth, so if something's loose I can't tell what it is.

I did have something similar fairly soon after I first got the Catloc and the dealer that fitted it confirmed the noise was something to do with the Catloc and sorted it out at no cost. But I've since moved and the local dealer here says they'll take a look but it might cost something like £115+VAT just to diagnose it - presumably plus whatever to fix it. I know the local garage down the road will at least do an inspection for this kind of thing with no charge so I'm tempted to let them have a look. If it is the Catloc though, does anyone know if it's likely to need specialist Toyota knowledge or equipment to sort it out?

Either way, I'm just a bit puzzled that the Catloc itself seems to be held firm but I can't think what else could have been affected by the impact, and the noise began right after that happened. I'm hoping it'll be fairly obvious one way or another once it's up on the lift.

Doesn't need special knowledge/equipment, take it to a local garage to inspect.

Thanks Mojo, and meanwhile... should have thought of this earlier but I finally thought to check if I wrote anything on this when it happened years ago... seems what may have happened (from mine and others' experience) is that the Catloc could have been bent slightly upwards, so it's potentially the movement of the exhaust against the Catloc that is making the noise, not the Catloc itself moving. At least that's one possibility I can get the local garage to check out.

Sure enough, it was the exhaust making contact with the Catloc, which had been pushed out by the impact (I'll be contacting the council about that bit of road). A trip to the garage and £39 quid later (half an hour's labour - not that it took that long) and it's sorted.

I always got nervous when going over those high bumps with short length with a catloc fitted.

I've had 2 occasions where the catloc slammed into the bump and it made a awful noise, had no damage luckily.
