my engine has given up on my 95 st202 and was wondering if anyone has any idea what is involve when fitting a 3s-gte engine out of a MR2 turbo?

It would be kept FWD, are the engine mounts the same?

any help or coments would be great!

you'd really need the gearbox as well, ideally an LSD equiped (1 or 1.5 way) as am unsure if your original box would be good enough with the power.

And the wiring loom, some fabrication of parts etc, but should be possible.

It'll cost though!

Its quite a job apparently. You also need the MR2 gearbox and driveshafts, the engine loom and ECU.

You also need the outer C.V joints from a GT4. The MR2 engine mounts are different so you need either your old mounts or prefferably the uprated version from a GT4. You could probably bolt the engine to your box but it probably wouldn't last long as it wasn't designed to take 220+ bhp. Besides that you really need the gearbox to be fitted with a limited slip differential to minimise the torque steer that you'll get by having that much power driving the front wheels, so you need to make sure that the MR2 gearbox has this. Its quite a popular conversion and has been done by a few people on here. Hopefully one of them will pop in and give you some guidance.

3SGTE CONVERSIONS

We can supply the following -

MR2 3sgte 2.0 turbo engine, with loom, ecu and all ancillaries to run the engine. Gearbox with linkage to convert to fwd, Hybrid driveshafts to suit, Power steering pump and brackets, alternator and brackets, Starter motor and uprated fuel pump. New Oil, filter, Cambelt & sparkplugs also included.

This is not a straight bolt in conversion, there is no magic shop selling everything you need. It is an engineers dream / nightmare of a job.You will need to manufacture your own exhaust system, intercooler system/pipework, engine mountings and re work the wiring loom

The following are options we can supply

Lsd gearboxes, Front mounted intercoolers made to your dimensions, Charge cooler systems, Clutches.

Many other upgrades please see ST185/ST205 parts lists.

Early Type 200BHP £1750.00

Late Type 245BHP £2300

wouldnt be that hard really but would be easier to use an mr2 box and shafts on a celica gt4 engine as this will be right for a FWD car. you will also need a gt4 radiator and fuel pump

the UK rev 2 3sgte fitted to ST185 has 200 ponies out of the box, the gen 6 3sge engine has 180 - so unless you plant to up the boost and spend money on mods, just go for another rev 3 3sge.

if you do go for the conversion, the rev 2 st185 celica gt4 engine would be easier with the MR2 transmission. if you want stomping power get the rev 3 st205 engine.

as this will all be at the front wheels, i personaly wouldnt go any higher than the rev 2 3sge..

but given insurance, cost and time to swap a fwd turbo project etc, why not just get that 202 sold and buy a GT4, its cheaper in the long run and all wheel drive rocks.
