Next time I see a tanker driver doing a delivery at the local BP/Shell etc, I will ask him where else he goes with his petrol load.

What do you think?

Good thinking batman

If he is at BP and his next stop is the local Asda, guess where I will be heading to refill? :D

The thing is that the tankers are marked up. I.E. if it is a bp wagon they will only be delivering to bp garages. Asda wagons to Asda etc. but you will see Asda, Safeway,Texaco wagons and others collecting fuel from the same places.

These days I use Sainsbury's (seeing as I'm of the opinion that it's just the same as the big brand petrol). I pay with my Barclaycard and give them my nectar card so I get double points on my petrol  .

I used to use Optimax all the time and on a fresh tank I reckon I felt a difference, but after a week or so it always seems to "go off" and I'd notice a drop in performance. If I filled up several times a week I never used to get this problem.

That's because these fuels are oxygenated fuels, which is just a posh word to say that they've added ethanol (or a similar oxygen rich alcohol or ester) to the fuel. The evaporation rate of ethanol is greater than the fuel, so it "goes off".

It's added in a concentration of around 8% and will increase the RON by about 2.

The original idea behind this was to sell it, at a higher price of course, as winter fuel to reduce CO-emissions. After it was found soon that on cars with emmision control systems this didn't really do nothing as claimed, Big Oil changed marketing strategy and is now trying to sell it to you as a, don't laugh, "performance fuel".

The higher octane rating could increase mileage by a slight margin, on the other hand the calorific value of it is less than "normal" fuel. Drastic changes in gas mileage after one tank are nothing but the result of different driving conditions. As Bibbs said, when revving the t*ts off, and provided you have fresh fuel, the higher octane rating will prevent sooner pre-detonation, so the ECU will not !Removed! ignition as fast. Most cars on the European market are mapped for 95 RON and don't have the ability to "detect" octane rating.

Cheers, Yves.

I put BP Ultimate in my 1.0L..I have done for ages - definately the past 5/6 times if not more..the cost doesnt bother me that much cos a tankful lasts me two weeks, sometimes more sometimes a bit less...I've noticed a quicker acceleration and smoother running on mine which is good for me..like others have said it'll take time for it to get settled in the engine and work, I'm quite happy with it to be honest..everyone is their own judge and your car either likes it or it doesnt I say lol.

It depends on the car tbh, using optimax in a ford escort esque car built in the uk wont have quite the same effect as it will on a turbocharged car from japan. In the former its literally a waste of money, in the latter its useful as anti-detonation protection. Personally I find that optimax gives me better mileage, smoother revving in gears and more consistent boost, so it pays for itself (and its cheaper than super unleaded near me anyway :hokus-pokus: )

*sigh*

I told you so

*sigh*

Yay! corrosive interfering detergents in the fuel!!! Just what everyone needs!!

re the jap turbo argument...

I'm on my 3rd jap import twin turbo.. ;)

I use Esso super plus.

if you want *better fuel* try a petrol/toluene mix, but what ever you do, don't use it with nitrous oxide!!!
