Since we're on the topic of lights...

how come I can change the gearbox on my old Renault 21 estate, but I've just had to admit defeat trying to change the bulb in the N/S sidelight on my 1998 Avensis estate?

It's very well buried in the rear light housing and impossible to get at, even though I've already removed the dip beam bulb to get better access.

Does anyone know if the bulb holder has to rotate before it comes out, as opposed to just pulling the damn thing?

If so, I might be able to get a pair of long nosed pliers on it.

Failing that, I'm going to borrow a JCB and remove the chassis.

If I remember rightly from when I changed mine it's like on a squeeze clip metal surround thing, a bit like you get on a champagne bottle, you need to squeeze the edges then pull quite hard and it'll come out.

Make sure when you put it back, you line it up properley with the marker otherwise you end up pointing light out into space as I found when someone driving infront of me who I knew flagged meover to say it was dazzling them.
