Auto Gearbox Problem

Hi There,

I wonder if anybody else has come across this problem? I have a 1994 2ltr automatic celica import ST202.

It has developed a problem where it won't shift into fourth gear (overdrive) until it has warmed up - usually about 10 miles down the motorway. Once it's shifted it's fine.

I've had the gearbox oil changed. Thought it could be the gearbox filter, but it turns out it doesn't have one.

Could it be a wiring problem? - recently the handbreak light has started to come on by itself.

I was told that it can be common for imports to be slow to change up to fourth, this is designed to protect the engine. But this has been getting worse and worse, and is very frustrating.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Belinda.

Did exactly the same on my gen5, once the engine was warmed up it was fine, had no gearbox probs at all, except for me doin burnout for a certain laxx power mag years ago which toasted box. Even did it when i had new box put on.

It's supposed to do this in order to bring the gearbox up to temp quickly.

You may not have a gearbox problem B) ,i have a Toyota workshop manual for the generation 6 celica, and it tells me that the ovedrive does not work until the engine reaches 57 degrees, so my guess would be the thermostat in the cooling system needs to be replaced, or put it another way, a thermostat is much cheaper that a gearbox overhaul....good luck ,keep us posted
