 how does everyone find their rav4 on fuel , mine is a 2002 vx 5 door i love it but everyone including my brother who`s got the same told me they are great on fuel, but up to now i`m not too impressed,it seems to average 25 to 26 mpg without any hard acceleration, i think this is poor considering everyone seems to be mentioning the 31 -32 ave mpg, does anyone have any suggestions?

First of all, are the figures you give calculated or from the trip computer as they don't match up, see other threads for details.

On my commute I get aroung 26mpg. This is a mix of A and B roads in rush hour traffic. On motorways I get well over 40mpg if I drive between 60 and 70mph.

Forgot to say, my figures are calculated, not trip computer indicated.

The only really good way to get a figure for mpg is

Go to a garage and fill up until the pump goes click.

Reset your odometer

Drive around for a week or two (a few days for you petrol heads, a few weeks for us dieseliers!)

Go back to the SAME pump, fill up until the click, pay and see how much fuel you have put in from your receipt and check your odometer then do a bit of maths!

I was asked to do this by Ford when I had an Escort that did 19mpg average, no, it was not a cossy it was just a 1.8i 16v

I took my escort back to the dealers loads of times. I even had to write to FORD UK and threaten them with legal action for false advertising with their fuel figures. They did a few things like change spark plugs to ford factory ones (taking out my NGK expensive ones and throwing them away!), loads and loads of tests, they even took the car for a week to drive so I ended up part exchanging it after 12 months. Lets hope Toyota are better than Ford. Its the reason I wont have another FORD (Fix Or Repair Daily)

Mine is the same.....I really love my RAV so I am going to convert it to LPG. My computer tells me i'm doing 23-24 mpg. I've also done the maths and it is about right. Anything upto about 70 on the motorway saves fuel but go over this mark at your peril. going over to lpg halves your costs for the same mileage. As soon as its done I will post up a review, at the moment the cost is about £1700, but their is an £800 grant available.

Can you please explain what converting a rav4 to "LPG" means in plain english? Firstly, what is LPG?

Sorry if I sound ignorant but anything that halves your costs for the same mileage is definitely of interest to me!

LPG = (Liquified Petroleum Gas)

But you may want to read these links first...

Is it any good?

Does your car qualify?

http://www.shellgas.co.uk/site/page/32/lang/en

I only found the Pruis to be eligible here... No mention of the Rav!

Unless someone here has had it done?

http://www.transportenergy.org.uk/grantsav...shift/register/

Petrol engines are fairly straightforward to convert, with a cost in the region of £1,500 to £2,000 (plus VAT) for a car or light van. Diesel engines are much more difficult to convert due to the absence of spark ignition. The conversion cost is around £7,000 to £15,000 - it makes sense to purchase a petrol engine and convert this.

Everyone has assured me that they can convert the RAV. There is an issue with the grants at the moment, but I should have the conversion completed within the week(grant depending).

Using LPG can't be that big a deal particularly for sturdy toyota engines, why would the police, local authorities, bus companies etc, use such vehicles???? Anyway i'm prepared to be the guinea pig, particularly if it saves me £1500 a year!!!

Intersting - where are they going to mount the additional tank and what sort of capacity / range will it provide ?

There is a range of tanks, the best option is a 90 litre, which is mounted in the boot. this leaves about a foot of boot left but stuff can be loaded on top, which give you a bit more space. I think the best option after that is a roof box. This effectively doubles the cars range to about 600 miles'ish. will tell you more when I get it done (hopefully next week)
