Ecu Replacement?

I have a 7th Gen - X reg Celica - 50,000 miles

I've been driving round with the orange fault light on for a few weeks now.

It came on after taking it in for a recall to have the brake master cylinder checked - could it be something the garage did?

After 4 visits to the local dealer (and a new Oxy sensor being fitted - £530). They tell me I need a new ECU unit fitting and have quoted £565 for the part and £738 including fitting.

Is this a common problem?

Am I being ripped off?

Is it OK to drive it in the mean time? I am planning to go away in it next week and don't want to damage the car / break down.

Is there anything to try before taking it back to the garage - I have seen posts about removing the fuse?

Would be interested in any comments.

Pete

Personally, I'd go in, guns blazing with the "it wasn't bust before you guys had it, and now it is - you fix it for free! And give me my money back on the Oxy Sensor!!". They have signs all over the place around only charging you for the problem when its fixed, they shouldn't be charging you for their guess work.

You can try resetting your ECU - remove the +ve Battery terminal (easier than working out which fuses to pull!) for half an hour or so, then re-fit, and go for a 'spirited' spin for it to sort itself out (you'll notice its a bit sluggish to start with, but that'll change after a few miles).

I'd also try another Dealer, if you have one close to you - like any garage, some are good, some not so.

As for what your actually problem could be, I'm afraid I have no idea... Sorry fella.

Oh, and welcome to the club! Go Gold and get 10% off parts and labour at a lot of Toyota garages!
