Problems With My Mr2!

i have 2 problems that may be common?, or may not actually be a problem?, maybe just me whittling.

1. today my Battery was flat and i had to use my booststarter to get the car going, and my 100 mile round trip to nottingham and back on the motorway was hopefully going to recharge the Battery (it seems to have worked), however for the first time, today every time i stop at lights etc. it only idles at about 250rpm and fluctuates between 500rpm and almost nothing - so much so that i have to keep pressing the gas to stop it stalling. is this perhaps cause the Battery hasnt much life to make it tickover nicely?, or is this a fault that people know about?

2. just got in from my 100 mile round trip, averaged 80 mph on the motorway, sometimes touched 115 ish (discovered car isn't delimited!!!!! - gonna have to see to this), so as u can see not too fast but when i pulled up at home there was a strange bubbling water sound coming from around the turbo area - maybe airbox? sounding like a kettle nearly boiling or like the sound u get from an expansion tank that is overflowing. on inspection i couldnt see anything, no steam, nothing leaking under car? - is this an mr2 sound after a run on the motorway or cud i have a problem?

any advice would be most appreciated. cheers.

Never heard of this one - no smoke, steam, no indication on the temp gauge that anything in the cooling systems is amiss?

Did you notice any smoke out of the exhaust?

Have you checked all the fluid levels and they are as they should be?

erm... :(

Was the missus making some coffee in front of the open kitchen window? :censor:

Oh yeah, and in response to number 1 - sounds like your alternator may be playing up? Also, I've found that batteries, once flat, often to not recover effectively, especially if they are old. Usually dodgy idles are service issues, but since you had a Battery problem, it might be that?

Wish I could be more help really.

just to backup what richb has said, point 1 looks like alternator and point b sound as ifit should be checked out by a specialist as have never come accros that before....

swapped the Battery and everything is spunkydory now, including idle and all other revs. other than Battery swap which i assume reset my ecu (and the driving i did afterwards) i didnt do anything else apart from take leads off spark plugs and put em back on again.

if after 3 weeks my Battery doesnt go flat again, i will assume it was a duff battery. if it does go flat in 3 weeks (the time i have owned the car) then i will have to have a charging circuit test done.

the bubbling seems to be air in the system (like u get on central heating)!, i carefully lifted the lid off the water hose whilst the engine was hot and bubbling (with a thick towel) and bled some air out and it seems to have cured it.

if anyone else gets these problems i hope my experience (and solution - so far) may help you.

  • 2 weeks later...

The bubbling noise you hear is indeed the water flowing to and from the radiator - since it's at the front of the car, and has a lot of pipe work to get through it can sometimes make this noise - don't worry, it's not overheating.

not sure about the first problem but after a new Battery has gone flat if it isn't recharged straight away it can ***** it up, not as hardy as old batteries.

the second one is common on mr2 turbos and isn't a problem, if you allow the engine to idle and cool down then it's less likely to make this noise. it's only water in the expansion tank flowing back.
