Tyre Talk

I have recently bought a 2003/52 Avensis 1.8VVTi 5 Door (last of the old shape) and I have those dredded wheelcaps with steels and 195/60/15 tyres.

The front are new Pirelli P6 (the last owner just replaced them 1,000 miles ago) and the rear are Michellin Energy (or something similar).

I noticed that the rear ones are not looking that sharp, the walls are cracking and the tread is low'ish.

I have used before on my old car (Honda Civic Sport) Bridgestone Potenza, Fulda Extremo (on a Merc with 17" AMGs) and Yokohama A510 (as it was back then on a Nissan), but I have now lost touch on what sort of tyres to buy! I want to buy something online (as I have a local fitter who can balance/fit) which has good grip, long lasting and most of all renowned for quality (as I do a lot of motorway driving - high speed).

Help would be appreciated. Also a website link(s) would be great.

Thanks.

New Avensis come with Bridgestone Touranza's as standard.

so the Potenza should be good :)

I always fitted Michelins to my Carina...

But I have stuck with the Bridgestones for my Avensis (replaces two so far)

You can have them delivered or fitted locally.

They were cheep!

Cheeper than I could get elsewhere, and the fitter where i had it done could just about beat the price for himself (but not me). I have not used them lately as the fitter that I used no longer supports blackcircles (maybe he got miffed about the price).

All brands, all sizes...

Mine is 1.8VVTi (2005) and has (put by Toyota) Bridgestone Turanza ER30. My previous car was WV Golf with exactely the same kind of tyres. On my Avensis I've done 15.000 km and no sign of wear. I've sold my Golf with 75.000 with original tyres (also Bridgestone Turanza ER30 205/55 - 16). They needed to be changed but still had a lot of deepnes.

If I were you I would go for these. They are quite, stick good on the road on sun or rain...

If you're able to put a little bit more money you can go for ER300 instead of ER30. One tyre specialist told me that Bridgestone make ER300 now and that those are better then ER30, just little bit more expensive.

Bridgestone Potenza is better tyre but more expensive. Also, Avensis is not the kind of car that need Potenza. Turanza is quite enough.

I have a 2004 avensis and after 7000 mile I had to replace front tyres Toyota dindt want to know they said that if they got the tyre man out he would say it was due to tyre inflation being wrong Dunlop sp 3000 now on Verdistine (bad spelling) wearing well and less noise.

Thanks for the advice. Look at this Froogle link: http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle_cluste...oring=mrd&hl=en - to put this in a nutshell, what does the 88V, 88H stuff mean, as there is around 10 or 20 quid difference between them!

Thanks.

The H and V that you mention, are the type speed ratings.

From Memory, I think that H was for a Max of 130mph and V 150+mph. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

An important point is to make sure that you are getting the same spped rating as the cars original fitment. God forbid you ever have an accident, but if the wrong type rating is fitting, your insurer could invalidate your insurance and not pay out !!!!

Cheers

Andrew
