i have tried taking it out and pouring boiling water and washing up liquid into it but it made no differance !

the toyota garage wants about £300 for a new pair and could not tell me if they were glass or plastic !

can i fit either or do i have to fit plastic ?

and where could i get new or good clean pair cheap ? seeing how bad those have gone i would prefer glass

Glass or plastic will fit....

However it shouldn't be an MOT fail!!!!! I'd take it somewhere else!!!

The yellowing is caused by oxidisation... many people swear by various methods of cleaning it off (from abrasive polish to corrosive cleaners that "burn" it of!!!)

I would get onto find a part and try and get some UK sped glas ones

Try these:

I know where to get new UK spec glass lights for £240 as well. ;)

Or if you fancy doing it yourself, there's a pretty good guide here:

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/headlights/index.html

I have a spare offside headlight in my shed that's slightly yellow - available for a small fee - if you want to practise on it?

There are some clips, but they're obvious ones. There's a walkthrough on the mkiv forum:

You might need to register to see the pics.

Here's a thread you should read before you wade in though:

best bet is check your local breakers. You remove the bulbs and all metal parts and bake in oven until the plastic rubber seal starts to melt then you pull the lights apart.....Before you do this get some G3 and BUFF the outer light 80% of the time it works.... If not stick erm in the oven...dead easy to do.....If you need DIY instructions let me know. Also you can facelift the lights at the same time...Just paint the inners matt black :-)

polish the inside and outside of the glass with tcut.

put the light in the oven the heat them up to prize apart.

when putting back together make sure everything is pristine, place headlight parts in oven again and use large amounts of silicon to help rejoin the 2 parts
