Possible Dyno Day - Kent (gaining Interest)

Alright, I've had an idea brewing recently - I have a friend down in Kent, and his father owns Bexley Motor Works, a BMW Specialist obviously...

anyway, I asked said friend if his dad would be willing to do a rolling road day for Starlet GT/Glanza/Paseo (James can come and show off in his ZX :P) etc owners down in Kent...and well he said it shouldn't be a problem, as his dad's already done several of dyno run days for Banzai, BMW Car and other Unity-Media based publications, as well as for numerous BMW clubs, and some Japanese car club...so that's just to get the reputation sorted

He also is an Official Unichip tuner, so that would be a possibility. Anyway, this isn't a call out to say its definite, I just wanted to know who would be interested in such an event - I mean I'm probably thinking a winter date would be what we're looking at, or perhaps early next year, I'm probably going to have my quad throttlebodies on then, and I'll need a unichip to control them, so I could use this to dial in the setup (well apparently there is a lot of refining needed so I'll have to go in for separate tuning sessions, but I could go on this when its all done).

I forget what my friend told me about how long a run took, I think he said 20min per car or something, or there's a 10min break per car or something...and its a 2wd only dyno. but usually after a rolling road day they all gather at a local pub as well for a chat and manly car chats

here's a quote from the email my friend just sent me about the usual format of the day

I asked dad about the dyno day. He said because he has to shut down the whole garage for a day there has to be a minimum number of cars attending for the test. 20 if you can! There's a fixed price of £35 [thirtyfive] per car which includes: Dyno warm up runs, Dyno final run [appox 1 per car], full tech' print off's and hot drinks for any participants or spectators. Petrol etc is not inlcuded and should be provided by the vehicle owner [though there is a garage 200yrds away if anyone needs to fill up!]. Other such T's&C's will be outlined on the day.

and its a 2wd only dyno. but usually after a rolling road day they all gather at a local pub as well for a chat and manly car chats

And here is the list as it stands, incluing people from other Toyota forums...

Just had a thought mate - can you check what HP the dyno can take?

Also i take it they can handle RWD cars? also just double check it can take 1,800KG

only other worry i have is i hear some garages offering dyno's are not equipped with facilities to cool the engine whilst in a run.

Edit: i've never been to a Dyno run so just want to make sure

well I know for sure it can do RWD cause its a BMW garage, so most of the cars are RWD that use it. HP and weight, ill ask but Ive got a few pictures from a session they did and they had a C4 Corvette, old shape M5 and a mk4 Supra up on the rollers and they're not very light

As for cooling, theyre's a big fan in the pictures, so I presume that that would be the cooling sorted - will ask about the horsepower and weight though. And its alright to be nervous mate, ive never gone on one either

dont be nervous, just make sure all your radiator and thermostat etc are in good condition, and you should always make sure everythings in tip top condition/serviced.

alright James, a few updates. Guy said there's no problem power-wise, the dyno is rated at over 1000hp, and its just been serviced and recalibrated. Weight-wise, well there isnt really a limit, you only have one axle on the rolling road at a time, and they've had Chrysler Voyager's, Maserati's, Volvo's etc on the rolling road

As for cooling, there are two fans always running, a carbon monoxide extractor and a large cooling fan that runs throughout the run - and if you need any extra cooling you could always take a drive around the block or leave it ticking over in the carpark

hope that helps matey

Anyway, got a reply from the friend, and pretty much now we have the number (im still accepting places though) we must decide on a date. Now as has been the general jist, some people here want to get work done beforehand so its " ready " for the Dyno.

Now ive got some work to do on the car, of which I will know more of on friday when its determined why Im burning so much oil - and im going away from June 27th till about early September. SO...Im thinking maybe the 1st week of October would be a good date? Well, anything on or after the 1st week of October suits me just fine, so anyone else that agree's or has any suggestions let me know

Also the people that have said "maybe", well let me know if the date is fine so I can confirm you guys. Im assuming once we have decided on a date then it can be definitely set as a date, and I dunno, maybe deposits are taken or whatnot, I dunno how it happens, but ill let you know either way! So yeah, let me know the date you'd be fine with pretty much! Ill probably u2u/pm everyone soon if I don't get many replies

  • 2 months later...

By advice of Tim (thanks for reminding me), just wanted to remind everyone of the dyno day pending for October. Sorry if I haven't made any updates in a while - truth be told the internet in Saudi Arabia was so slow, I just couldn't be bothered.

Anyway, I'll decide on a final date soon, and in the next few days I'll be going to the garage where my car is getting fixed and let them know about the date and see any details for payment and whatnot...to secure the positions there (as its typical for people to drop out). Date-wise, I think either the following:

- Monday 11th

- Tuesday 12th

- Any weekday starting from the 18th to the 27th

As for the people I have down coming to the dyno day, here's the list:

1. Enrico

2. AdDaMan(Adam) Glanza (TGTT)

3. Coochy (TGTT)

4. Sera_beetle (Sera club)

5. Dbest02 (TGTT)

6. Toyobaz (TGTT)

7. Tuckerd (TGTT)

8. VTRick (TGTT)

9. DAN_GTT (TGTT)

10. Ant (UKSeoClub)

11. LancsLad (UKSeoClub)

12. Threepot (UKSeoClub)

13. Impressive G - maybe (Sera club)

14. Andrew Cliffe - Maybe (Sera club)

15.Mr_micmc (TGTT)

16. ed (TGTT)

17. James (300zx)

18. kj_GT-T (TGTT)

19. knowlson - maybe (TOC)

20. Robbo - maybe (TGTT)

21. Purplishblue (TGTT)

22. Caffer (Rover Tomcat)

23. wastegateflutter - (TGTT)

24. Darius_Lines

25. mike_1984

26. SeoRon (UKSC)

27. Seoron's friend

29. Toby

So if anyone else wants to come, feel free to ask. For anything else, just ask me too, thanks
