1984 Landcruiser - Help Please.

Hi every one.

Well I've got a bit of a story.

I bought an A reg Landruiser last weekend. Great big thing. 4 liter deisel. It passed its MOT on the day I bought it. I gave it a good look over and a drive. Seemed fine. I've been looking for an old, (read, affordable) Deisel Landcruiser for a while so I was really happy when I found this in Swansea.

When I got insurance through the AA they told me it was the only A reg Landcruiser on their records. So I was pretty delighted. A true, rare classic. It's scruffy, but has only a few spots of body rust. No problems, I can fix that up myself.

Then on the way back to London, as I was just starting to fall in love with the old beasty, the shaft that drives the cooling fan snapped. The fan was destroyed and the radiator punctured.

Can any one tell if this can be repaired. Where I can source the parts, (cheaply, Toyota, is definately out of my budget). Does anyone think this is something I could do myself, given that I'm a novice at mechanics. (I'm a builder). I'm not frightened to give it a go if it's a question of working out how and getting my hands dirty.

I really don't want to write this off. I'm already feeling very affectionate towards the old girl. I would love to get it back on the road. The rest of the engine is fine, I think. I drove it for ten minutes or so yesterday to get it off the street.

I hope some one can help with advice or even give me a hand, (I'll buy dinner or pay a reasonable amont for help).

Thanks for any comments.

:crybaby:

the shaft for the fan is part of the water pump,so you will need to replace the pump,if you can't get a replacement then you can fit a electric fan, there is normally enough space on these big cars. The simplest way to do this is by using a on-off switch. The car will only get hot when stationary in traffic, keep an eye on the temp guage and switch it on when needed.I used a fan off a mark 4 escort on a carlton-similar problem and it worked perfectly for years. The rad can be rebuilt if you can't get a replacement to buy. There is a place in north london that rebuild them.

Also check Milner off road for spares.

Hope this helps.
