Antifreeze "dissapears" In Toyota Carina E 1.8 7a-fe

Dear all,

I'm wondering if you could help me with the problem of cooling system in my Toyota Carina.

I've noticed that my car requires regular (at least weekly) top-ups of the antifreeze (expansion tank is always almost empty); at the same time I've yet to see any leaks under my car. The engine oil (both in dipstick and under oil filling cap) also does not seem to have "milky" colour to it.

Until recently engine had not overheated; but one episode of overheating after driving in city on the last Saturday made me look for the reason of antifreeze loss. Car mechanic couldn't find any leaks from radiator.

The secons problem is heater, which sometimes works and sometimes blows just cold air. Could this problem be relevant to the loss of antifreeze?

I'd appreciate your comments regarding these problems.

Thanks in advance.

I would suggest that the water pump needs replacing. The loss of coolant is probably through the bearing shaft. See:

The loss of coolant can be difficult to spot.

The heater problem is likely to be related

Thank you for your advice! I will try and take my car to the garage tomorrow to have this issue investigated.
